Five ways to wear a navy blazer

Why it's an essential for a smart wardrobe and a few tips on how to buy a great one!

Why do we need this piece in our wardrobe?

A classic navy blazer is a great key basic to smarten up an outfit and gives a leaner and more flattering silhouette no matter what your size. You only have to people-watch in Paris and Milan and notice how many women wearing this piece as they know how useful it is for dressing up or down for work, to meet friends or for a weekend break with a dress or jeans and shirt. A good one will last you for years (so good for sustainability too!). The price of a decent quality blazer is between €70 and €300 (more for high end designer). You will love this investment piece because:

1. It can be worn at any time of the year so is easily worn thirty times

2. You can easily create different looks, dress it up or down to create either casual or formal looks.

3. It will enhance your figure disguising most problem areas no matter which shape you are, especially if you're feeling lumpy and bumpy.

The blazer I used here on Kyana is my own that I bought from Hobbs in Brown Thomas three years ago for approx €120 and is a UK size 12 (see photos of it below). It's a waisted, single breasted style with three buttons and two pockets. It's been a great piece for work and leisure, only needing an occasional dry clean and yes, I've worn it at least 30 times so it owes me nothing. Read more below on how to shop for a blazer... What to look for when buying a blazer:

1. Check that the fabric and buttons are good quality, with a good lining and light shoulder padding for structure. A blend with wool is good from autumn to Spring and a cotton/linen blend is lighter to wear in the Summer heat.

2. If you are petite or average height, opt for a waisted shape with a shorter length to mid-hip like on Kyana here who is 5ft 3". If you are very tall it's more flattering to go for a longer shape to the top of thighs (see photo below).

3. For the right fit the shoulder seam should sit right on your shoulder with no tightness on your upper arms). The sleeve end should fall to below your wrist. Check that you’re able to button it without any fabric or lining pulling in the middle. Do a stretch test by giving yourself a hug and if you’re feeling any tightness then try a bigger size. Don’t be afraid to go up a size as you can easily get the sleeves shortened and buttons moved if needed. Because sizing systems differ so much between brands I never pay too much attention to the size on the tag but focus on what fits well and is comfortable. Remember nobody will be looking at the size label you wear but a badly fitting garment can ruin your look!

4. For chic smart casual looks you can wear with dark jeans, (or white pants and bermuda shorts in Summer), with red, white or breton striped tops, or a crisp white shirt and silk neck scarf. Also great over a wool turtleneck or slim hoody in Winter. Changing shoes and accessories can quickly take you from the office to a dinner/event, e.g. change from white or tan shoes to glitzier red or gold heels or sandals, and statement jewellery (see photos) for a more glamorous look.
